As bodies develop histories; they are tangible vessels that manifest consciousness. Zeina Baltagi’s work endures a similar process, beginning with a substrate and acquiring multiple layers over time. Hand-made and commercial papers bearing images, textures, and flaws receive ideas and actions made visible.
Sometimes the processes yield chaotic results and precede the sought after transformation of materials. The work is torn apart, sewn back together, pierced, abraded, and distressed until it becomes an artifact of this transformative process. Distressed yet precious, the remnants of my labor-intensive process function as documents of mobility and reify the process of transformation.
Groundwork embodies the shared struggle she has experienced with mobility. It represents the strength in honesty and vulnerability.
It is a solo exhibition in honor of the foundation Zeina has buildt at California State University, Northridge.
