Kaufman’s lifelong devotion to language has moved her to write a series of stageplays which have been performed in New York City as well as Virginia, California, Florida and Scotland. Subjects range from high finance to jail house weddings, to plastic surgery, geriatrics, space lust, and to a vindication and celebration of Hamlet’s virtuous mother Gertrude.

When her comedy HAMLET’S MOTHER’S IN LOVE first played at NYC’s Westbeth Theatre The New York Post dubbed her the female Tom Stoppard”. Ophelia’s lament was included in “Best Scenes and Dialogues” of that year. Her comedy ABOUT FACE was about age and the unexpected perils of hiding it ..plastic surgery. SNOW, an imagistic history of sexism, racism, and very high heels
shocked Dublin. She has written plays about women married to prisoners, the new electronics barriers to communication between generations, love, hate & roller skating in a hospital emergency room….

Kaufman has earned grants & fellowships with Pen & Brush NYC, Virginia Canter for the Creative Arts. The Tyrone Guthrie Center in Ireland, American & International PEN, Wings Playwrights NYC, Third Step Theatre NYC, Ragdale Foundation Illinois, Djerassi Foundation, California. Pat’s video document of the 1988 Dramatist Guild outreach program to women playwrights all over this country is now in the Lincoln Center Drama Archives.

With a touch of cynicism laced with humor, Kaufman is a visionary expressing her passion to live, think, grow and laugh about the puzzles of love, justice, and psychic, societal and actual imprisonments.

The University of Michigan has taken her written works–plays, short stories, novels, and journals– into their Archives, which Kaufman regards as a great honor.
