Shawn Fields @ Dowling Walsh Gallery September 4th – 26th  2015.

Growing up outside of Baltimore, Maryland, Shawn’s early conception of art was formed by a monthly subscription to Mad Magazine, and exposure to traditional American painting and illustration. Shawn studied drawing and painting at the School of Visual Arts (BA), spent three years at the Water Street Atelier in New York, and received an MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art.

ARTISTS STATEMENT:

Gene Wilder turns to the character Veruca Salt in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1969), and says:
“We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams…”

The children in the drawings and paintings in this show are stand-ins for the universal person. They are celebrating present freedom and possibilities.

“We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;—
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.”
