The Art School at Old Church is pleased to announce TOYS, a toy-themed multi-media exhibit curated by Asha Ganpat, on display from September 14 through October 31, 2018 in the Mikhail Zakin Gallery, located in The Art School at Old Church (561 Piermont Road, Demarest, NJ). There will be an opening reception on Friday, September 28 from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. The reception is free and open to the public, with the curator and artists in attendance.
Each year, The Art School at Old Church works with outside curators who create an exhibition based around a particular theme, artist, or style of work. In this way, The Art School brings new artistic voices to the community with each exhibit, all free and open to the public, while also providing selected artists a unique space and art-loving audience for their show. Guest curators mold and develop the show, working with The Art School’s Gallery Manager, Emma Abad, on the display. The art in the TOYS exhibit responds to the question: What happens when the objects of youth are put through a filter of maturity?
“It is easy to overlook that childhood has only recently been a period of innocence, of joy, and of play,” Ganpat explains. “Today, toys inhabit the spaces of youth; if one is accused of playing games, they are perhaps guilty of immaturity. In this exhibition, the artists’ childhoods are behind them, yet still they reach back to the objects of their aught-years. The artworks share in expressions of distortion. Whether the toys are disoriented and in peril or infused with the concerns of adulthood, these are not the toys of nurseries.”
Artists include Nanette Reynolds Beachner, Chee Bravo, Marcy Chevali, Patricia Dahlman, Michael Endy, David Fratkin, Gabrielle Gutierrez, Josh Jordan, Morris Jurgensen, Suprina Kenney, Carolyn Oberst, Laurie Pettine, Christopher Priority, Nan Ring, Roger Sayre, Anne Spence, Miriam Stern, Peter Tilgner, Lisa Westheimer, and Judy Wukitsch.
