Announced: Julia Sinelnikova “Ice Pores” @ Lazy Susan Gallery

Lazy Susan Gallery presents Julia Sinelnikova ”Ice Pores”. On view December 13th – December 21st, 2018. Opening Party: December 13th 7pm – 10pm

Julia Sinelnikova is an interdisciplinary artist who works with holograms, performance, and digital culture. Her most recent work “Ice Pores” is based around a new iteration of Sinelnikova’s “Fairy Organs” a series of hanging light-reactive hand cut sculptures which create an interactive immersive environment. “Interaction with the audience is my primary artistic focus, in an age when art is increasingly presented in 2D and digital formats”. Through costumed performance, video, and programmed electronics, the artist aim’s to expand the sensory reach of the viewer.

The artist’s most recent work for “Ice Pores” is inspired by the myth of the Fairies, beautiful and mercurial, as well as by the highly interchangeable nature of the contemporary digital persona, these modular works represent a realm of dangerous beauty. These creatures come from her upbringing in Russia, where she was exposed to fables describing fairies as both benevolent, and manipulative. The light refractions within the installations create an infinite, mirrored space for the viewer to slip into self-reflection through this meditative space. Living in a world greatly controlled by technology, the artist utilizes transparent sculptural elements and light play as a metaphor – intangible structures controlling physical space, just as digital functions control human life. When interacting with the work, the artist takes on a character called “The Oracle,” an alien version of Sinelnikova who channels the installations through a handmade costume and an alchemist persona.

The December 13th opening party will feature a spoken word and movement performance, drawing the audience into meditation. Two additional intimate performances will feature and Vector Gallery artists interacting with the light works alongside Sinelnikova via spoken word and movement.

Sinelnikova’s light installations have been exhibited internationally, and she has performed widely as The Oracle of Vector Gallery. She has received commissions from the New York City Parks Department, Pace University, Michael Madden (Maroon 5), Webster Hall, and Norte Maar. Heavily inspired by electronic music, Sinelnikova has designed sculptural sets for performers including Lee Burridge, Machinedrum, Peaches, The GZA (Wu Tang Clan), and Aurora Halal. Selected profiles of her work have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, VICE, Artnet, Huffington Post, The Creators Project, PAPER Mag, and The New Criterion. Her work has been presented at the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston, The Oulu Museum of Art, and Williamsburg Art & Historical Center. Sinelnikova has also exhibited site-specific installations for Miami Art Week / Art Basel annually since 2011. She holds a BFA in Sculpture from The Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY). She lives and works in Brooklyn.
